Hilfield Friary

Residential guests (individuals and groups)

Hilfield Friary provides a variety of accommodation for visitors:

The Friary Guest House (Leo House) contains seven single rooms and one twin-bed room, including a ground-floor room which has level access to a toilet and shower. This is available for those wanting to come on retreat or simply to share the life and prayer of the community for a few days. For the daily pattern of prayer click here (opens a separate window). It is open from Tuesday until Sunday afternoon and guests eat with the brothers and the wider community in the refectory. A large common room is available to guests next to the community library and brothers are usually available for individual conversation and guidance.

Self-Catering Accommodation available for groups and families (Bernard and Juniper Houses). These are two large houses containing respectively six rooms (one double and one with twin beds) and seven rooms (one with twin beds); in both there is one en-suite downstairs bedroom. Bed-linen and towels are provided. The houses are comfortably furnished and have well equipped kitchens; it’s expected that those staying in them will usually self-cater. They are available for groups and families organising their own programme or for courses and retreats run by the Friary.

(l-r: Leo House; Bernard House; Juniper House)

Day visitors (individuals & Groups) The Friary welcomes people, both individuals and groups, to come for the day, to enjoy the grounds, to use the chapels for private prayer and to join the community in worship. A large room (seating capacity sixty) with facilities for making tea and coffee is available for parish and other groups, and other rooms can usually be found for smaller meetings. Day visitors normally bring a packed lunch.

Accessibility The Friary Guest House (Leo House) has a ground-floor room which has level access to a toilet and shower. The Self-Catering Accommodation for groups and families (Bernard & Juniper Houses) each has one en-suite downstairs bedroom.

Other Facilities

St Francis Chapel, at the heart of the Friary both physically and spiritually, is in what was originally the cow byre of Flowers Farm, and retains something of the simplicity of its original use. Visitors are welcome to join the community for the daily offices and the Eucharist, and to use the chapel for their own personal prayer throughout the day.

The Secret Garden is hidden in a fold of the land which contains a pocket of peaty soil. Here Br Vincent an expert on rhododendrons has created an enchanting woodland walk, containing many choice specimens of plants from around the world. It’s a treasure trove for plant specialists and a quiet place for people to wander through.

Other things we can offer The Friary has an annual programme of quiet days and retreats as well as courses and events concerning Franciscan spirituality, appreciation and care for the environment, interfaith understanding and dialogue, and working for justice and peace.
