Palm Sunday

Holy Week begins with PALM SUNDAY—a day when the liturgy has 2 distinct parts. One is a commemoration of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, essentially a liturgy of palms:

“A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds…..were shouting ‘Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!’ (Matthew 21: 8-9 – NRSV)

The other is a move into the Passion where we hear a summary of the events that are about to happen in Jesus’ life with the reading of one of the gospel accounts of the Passion. From the carnival atmosphere of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, we are left with the word ’Crucify’ ringing in our ears, as we begin a week in which we are invited to walk with Christ, towards the cross.

“For the venerable father was in fact marked in five parts of his body with the marks of the passion and the cross, as if he had hung on the cross with the Son of God. This is a great sacrament, and evidence of the grandeur of a special love.”
