Feast of the Epiphany

The Epiphany or the Manifestation of Christ celebrates the revealing of Christ to the world; the revealing of what is hidden. In particular it focuses on the visit of the Magi and the gifts that they brought to the baby Jesus. The gift of gold, points us to Jesus the Servant King; the gift of incense reminds us of Jesus power to overcome death and to rise from death to new life, to overcome the power of sin and to bring forgiveness to all and the gift of myrrh (used for anointing a body before burial) points us to the Jesus who was born to die and to give his life for us.

‘Anoint us with this sacred oil and refresh with the longed-for-waters of this torrent, the thirsting throat of our parched hearts, so that amid shouts of joy and thanksgiving we may sing to you a canticle of praise.’

(‘The Tree of Life’, by St Bonaventure)
