Novice Experience 2012

The Group gathers and the Journey Begins

Brother Joseph Emmaneul N/SSF writes:

As part of Novice Formation the Novices meet together throughout the year: at events for Anglican Novices; with the Sisters of the Poor Clare Federation and OFM Brothers at Arkley and as Novices of C/SSF for a ‘Novice Experience.’ This year we met at Alnmouth and were encouraged to think about the life and witness of the Northumbrian Saints. That we were able to do so in the area where they lived and witnessed was inspiring to say the least. At the beginning of the week we spent the majority of our time ‘in the classroom’ hearing presentations on the historical background and individual saints from Br Desmond Alban SSF, Sr Heather Francis OHP and Canon Kate Tristam (whose encyclopaedic knowledge of ‘Celtic’ Christianity was both inspiring and extremely impressive). In the later part of the week we travelled around Northumbria (courtesy of a minibus, Br Des and a Sat Nav!) and visited Holy Island, Bamburgh, Hexham and Durham. During our endeavours we were accompanied by Sr Louisa Ann nOHP and were delighted to be able to join the OHP Sisters at Whitby for their Patronal Eucharist (and lunch!) for St Hilda. We were warmly welcomed by the Alnmouth Brothers and, as many of us began our journey in SSF in Alnmouth, it was good to reacquaint ourselves with those who come to the Friary to worship.
