Community of Saint Clare

The Second Order, known as the Order of St Clare (OSC) has always been closely linked with the First Order, and more recently the Third Order, though their way of life is different from either. The Sisters live an ‘enclosed’ life at the Convent in Freeland, Oxfordshire – unless some necessary reason takes them away from home. The degree of seclusion and space is valued and needed for prayer which is the purpose of the life. Like others, the Sisters work to earn a living – printing, making altar breads, various handicrafts as well as caring for guests in the separate guest accommodation. The Sisters grow all they can of their own food.

The daily Eucharist and the Office, said according to ‘The Daily Office SSF’ is shared by guests and any others who wish to join them in chapel. During the day time is made for about three hours personal prayer and reading. The community life is of great importance as the Sisters learn to live peacefully with a varied group of people and this is part of their prayer for the world.
