Leeds SSF

The friary in Leeds is in Harehills; an area where people new to the country often find themselves making their first home in the UK. Today it has many people whose forebears came from Pakistan and Bangladesh but more recently there are also people seeking a fresh start or sanctuary from other parts of the world; you especially find a lot of people who are in the asylum system.

We are involved with several voluntary organisations that seek to assist asylum seekers, especially those who find themselves destitute. We assist people with filling in forms or accompanying to interviews or making phone calls on their behalf. We have people come to stay for a few days who would otherwise be destitute and sometimes it seems right that the person stays on for several weeks or months. Our work is about befriending and helping to relieve destitution but we like to think that our hospitality also brings a little dignity and encouragement into often rather hopeless situations.

The brothers are here to be a Christian presence but also to engage with our neighbours and to find ways to be of service
