Residential Guests (individuals and groups)

The Friary is a welcoming place to stay for time to pray, study, relax and be with God.  Some guests come as organised groups, often with their own leader and occasionally with talks and guidance from a brother.  Many others come as individuals or with one or two friends.

The Friary is open to guests through the year, apart from short closed periods, usually from Monday to Sunday (we are closed from Sunday lunchtime until Monday morning).  Bookings usually are not accepted for one night only.  The guest rooms are in the main part of the house with use of a pleasantly furnished common room and a spacious library, both with stunning sea views, and guests can also make use of the gardens, a large downstairs sitting room (front hall) and the main chapel and smaller Blessed Sacrament Chapel.  Some rooms are occasionally booked for use by day groups.

Guests usually eat with the brothers in the refectory although it is possible for individuals wishing to remain in silence to have their meals separately.  Meals for the whole household can be kept silent for a retreat group.   Breakfast is self-service, buffet-style, and tea is usually served in the front hall before Evening Prayer, when local friends often attend.   There is a small shop selling cards, booklets and religious goods.

Day Visitors (individual and groups)

Individual day visitors are able to use the communal rooms unless they are booked for a group, and the chapels and library are generally kept in silence.  We can accommodate groups of up to about 30.  The comfortable seating in the beautiful main chapel provides flexible accommodation during worship which is adjusted to suit the numbers present in the house.

Individual day visitors either bring their own lunch or arrange to join the brothers and other guests for the cooked main meal at lunchtime. We ask day groups to bring their own packed lunch, though cold drinks can be provided, as are tea, coffee and biscuits.

Accessibility

There is wheelchair access to the chapels and other ground floor rooms as well as the terraced garden.  The other public rooms and guest bedrooms are accessible via a lift, and two of the bedrooms and a shower room and toilet are adapted for disabled use.

Saint Anthony’s Chalet

Separate arrangements exist for the booking and use of this largely self-contained accommodation which represents a recent development in our ministry at the friary and is intended for families or groups from particular situations of need.  Inquiries can be made to the Guardian.

Other things we can offer

There are occasional special events at the friary such as garden open days.

Brothers may be available to spend time with individuals by arrangement for spiritual direction, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, or just to give time to listening and conversation.  Guests and visitors can also often join the brothers in practical work if they wish to do so, which can provide a wonderful opportunity for informal conversation, though brothers also have other commitments.

How to Book

Those hoping to stay as residential guests should address their enquiries to the Guest Brother, and individuals and groups planning a day visit need to contact the Guardian.

We may be contacted by email: alnmouthssf@franciscans.org.uk , by post or by phone.  Please always include your name, postal address and phone number, and not just an email address.  The best times to try phoning are Tuesday to Saturday 9.15 – 11.45; 2pm – 4.30pm and 7.30 – 8.30pm (but not Thursday evening).

Receipt of a completed booking form and a non-returnable booking fee confirms the reservation.

The brothers take turns to cook alongside their other duties.  We are limited in our ability to offer many alternative diets and do not keep specialist food items but we can provide vegetarian, vegan or medically necessary diets (e.g. dairy free) by arrangement.  Guests are asked to make such needs clear when they book and we are not able to cater simply for personal preferences in the sharing of our family meals together.  However, guests often comment favourably on the food served!

Financial Donations

We welcome all people to the Friary and offer you our Franciscan hospitality.  It    is important to us that you come and share our life, whatever your circumstances.  We do not charge for your visit but would be glad to accept any donation towards the cost of running the friary and its ministry.  Our suggested donations can be found here.  As a registered charity we   are able to reclaim tax on these donations, from UK taxpayers who are willing to sign a Gift Aid declaration.  Gift Aid information and forms are available from the Guest Brother or Bursar.

The House at Compton Durville is now closed to guests. The public ministry ended with a farewell Eucharist on Saturday 22nd May 2010. Over the forthcoming months the sisters will be preparing to move to different locations within the Province. There will be a new rural house opening in the Diocese of Lincoln shortly, which in time will be able to receive day visitors and will have space for one resident guest. As details become available they will be posted on the news page of this website. Once the new house is open to visitors details will appear on this page.
The daily pattern of prayer will continue until the sisters leave, but may be subject to alteration.

The monastery at Glasshampton provides a comfortable place to stay on retreat, or a few days ‘away from it all’, somewhere to work, study, pray and to spend time with God.

Open to guests between Tuesday afternoon and Monday morning; there are five guest rooms for men and women staying at the monastery.

Guests join the brothers at meals in the refectory where meals are taken in silence. We are happy to cater for some special diets if arranged prior to booking.

Glasshampton has a small sitting room for guests, which can also be used by visiting groups (up to 12 people), a well stocked library, and a small shop, selling a selection of confectionery, cards and gifts.

Guests are welcome to walk in the gardens and beyond the monastery, following one of the many footpaths in the area. The area is one of great natural beauty, surrounded by woods and fields. Many guests like to spend time in reading and study, or praying quietly in the chapel, or if they wish to help with some work in the garden.

Day Visitors (individuals and groups)
There is a small sitting room, seating up to 12 people which can be used by visiting groups. We ask day groups to bring their own packed lunch. Tea, coffee and biscuits are available to all day visitors.

Retreats
The monastery does not offer individually guided retreats, but provides an atmosphere of prayer and quiet, allowing space for the Holy Spirit to guide those who come and to continue their walk with God.

Other things we can offer

We welcome resident guests and some individual day guests to join the brothers for meals, eaten in silence in the refectory and are happy to cater for some special diets if arranged in advance.

Residential guests (individuals and groups)
Hilfield Friary provides a variety of accommodation for visitors:

The Friary Guest House (Leo House) contains seven single rooms and one twin-bed room, including a ground-floor room which has level access to a toilet and shower. This is available for those wanting to come on retreat or simply to share the life and prayer of the community for a few days.  For the daily pattern of prayer (opens a separate window).   It is open from Tuesday until Sunday afternoon and guests eat with the brothers and the wider community in the refectory. A large common room is available to guests next to the community library and brothers are usually available for individual conversation and guidance.

Self-Catering Accommodation available for groups and families (Bernard and Juniper Houses).
These are two large houses containing respectively six rooms (one double and one with twin beds) and seven rooms (one with twin beds); in both there is one en-suite downstairs bedroom. Bed-linen and towels are provided. The houses are comfortably furnished and have well equipped kitchens; it's expected that those staying in them will usually self-cater. They are available for groups and families organising their own programme or for courses and retreats run by the Friary.

Day visitors (individuals & Groups)
The Friary welcomes people, both individuals and groups, to come for the day, to enjoy the grounds, to use the chapels for private prayer and to join the community in worship. A large room (seating capacity sixty) with facilities for making tea and coffee is available for parish and other groups, and other rooms can usually be found for smaller meetings. Day visitors normally bring a packed lunch.

Accessibility
The Friary Guest House (Leo House) has a ground-floor room which has level access to a toilet and shower.
The Self-Catering Accommodation for groups and families (Bernard & Juniper Houses) each has one en-suite downstairs bedroom.

Other Facilities
St Francis Chapel, at the heart of the Friary both physically and spiritually, is in what was originally the cow byre of Flowers Farm, and retains something of the simplicity of its original use. Visitors are welcome to join the community for the daily offices and the Eucharist, and to use the chapel for their own personal prayer throughout the day.

The Secret Garden is hidden in a fold of the land which contains a pocket of peaty soil. Here Br Vincent an expert on rhododendrons has created an enchanting woodland walk, containing many choice specimens of plants from around the world. It's a treasure trove for plant specialists and a quiet place for people to wander through.

Other things we can offer
The Friary has an annual programme of quiet days and retreats as well as courses and events concerning Franciscan spirituality, appreciation and care for the environment, interfaith understanding and dialogue, and working for justice and peace.
