Today is GOOD FRIDAY.The central theme is of course the cross and at the heart of the service is a narration of the events leading to the crucifixion.This service is traditionally punctuated by silence and time for reflection and meditation. It is a time for us to enter more deeply into the finished work of Christ, his death and resurrection, and to be faced more clearly and realistically with the challenge of the crucified Lord in the world today, as we offer our prayers at the foot of the cross and recall Jesus last words.

In some churches veneration of the cross forms part of the Good Friday Liturgy. In making the sign of the cross we actively receive all God offers us in Christ (forgiveness, protection, blessing).We remind ourselves that we belong to Christ, and that we live in the presence of the cross. Veneration of the cross is an expression of our love and commitment to Christ who died for us and is a very personal moment of prayer. 

‘We adore you most holy Lord Jesus Christ
here and in all your churches throughout the world
and we bless you
because by your holy cross
you have redeemed the world.’

This prayer is recorded in Francis’ Testament, dictated as he lay dying. It was certainly not a new prayer, but one which he had used many times during his life.
