Today is MAUNDY THURSDAY where we remember especially Jesus' Last Supper with his disciples. This is another liturgy that moves us on. It begins with the Eucharist and the washing of feet, where there is an emphasis on fellowship, and where even on this night, there is a hint of celebration. It ends with the garden, the watch, the desertion of disciples and the darkness. This is reflected in the service by the stripping bare of the altars, the dimming of the lights and then a silent departure without blessing or dismissal. The Vigil, or the time of watch is a profound experience, kneeling in a shadowy darkened church as if in the garden of Gethsemane, engaging with what it means to ‘watch with Christ’.

While they were eating, he took
a loaf of bread, and after blessing it broke it, gave it to
them and said, 'Take; this is my body'. Then he took a cup,
and after giving thanks he gave it to them, and all of them
drank from it. He said to them, 'this is the blood of my
covenant, which is poured out for many.'

[Jesus} got up from the table,
took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around him. Then he
poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples feet
and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him.

‘He came out and went as was his
custom, to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples followed
him. When he reached the place he said to them, 'Pray that you
may not come into the time of trial.’Then he withdrew from
them about a stone’s throw, knelt down and prayed, ‘Father if
you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet not my will but
yours be done’.......when he got up from prayer, he came to
the disciples and found them sleeping because of
grief.’
(Luke: 39-46 – NRSV)
