Candlemas

This feast commemorates the ritual purification of Mary, 40 days after the birth of her son.  It also celebrates the presentation of Christ to God in the Temple. In the Temple Jesus is greeted by Simeon and Anna; Simeon, who had been promised by the Lord that he would not die until he had seen the Messiah, prophesied to Mary that Jesus would be a sign that people would not believe in.  It is a turning point in the Christian year as we take one last look at Christmas before turning towards the cross as the season of Lent approaches.

“Simeon took him in his arms and praised God saying, ‘Master now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for the glory of your people Israel.’”

(Luke 2: 28-32 – NRSV)
