SSF Alnmouth
Alnmouth Friary celebrated the fortieth anniversary of its foundation on 15 August, the major feast day of the
Blessèd Virgin Mary, patron of all Franciscans. Despite reduced numbers in the house, the Friary’s life
remains vibrant and, with the regular assistance from Tertiaries and other helpers, the friars remain committed
to a three-fold witness, namely Mission, Movement and Mystery.
MISSION: although the house is presently unable to respond to every external evangelistic invitation, the
constant flow of individuals and groups who cross our threshold provides daily opportunities to proclaim the gospel.
Our joy is that our community life here opens a window to God for strangers and pilgrims.
MOVEMENT: the solid Friary building speaks of ‘stability’ as a local landmark, but our ministry of hospitality
enables a great movement of the Spirit within the house. This movement occurs when individuals move from isolation
to communion, from anxiety to surrender and from fear to hope. Our ministry of spiritual direction, confession
and friendship moves forward such realities.
MYSTERY: at the heart of Alnmouth’s life is the desire to provide opportunities for others to experience
the mystery of God in Christ. The simple graciousness of our chapels, with the rhythmic daily offering of Mass
and Office, close to our quiet garden and the haunting Northumbrian coast, points to God’s mysterious beauty.
Through loving attention to God in worship, and in each other, God graces people with a glimpse of their own inner
beauty too. Alnmouth is a converting place.
